Brands 'pollute Chinese rivers'
The chemicals found in the textile complex Youngor near Shanghai and the plant dye Well near Hong Kong included nonylphenol, a subset of alkyl phenols, and perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs).
Alkylphenols and some PFCs are banned by the EU, even if they are still widely used in the textile industry in developing countries like China.
The chemicals have hormone disrupting properties that can cause feminization of fish and reduce the sperm count in men, the report said.
"Now we have scientific evidence confirming that hazardous chemicals are released into rivers in China to make clothes worn by people around the globe," said Vivien Yau, a Greenpeace activist in Hong Kong, which was part of a team that compiled the report.
