The Aleutians Islands: The Forgotten War. In the summer of 1942 Imperial Japan seized its only footholds on American soil; the island of Attu and Kiska on the far western edge of Alaska's Aleutian Island chain. Though wind-swept and inhospitable, the island's occupation was a great blow to American's pride and their capture became a national priority. The U.S. Army's 17th Infantry regiment invaded Attu in May 1943 and Kiska 2 months later. Attu's recapture took 19 bloody days of fighting before the island was finally secured. Of the 3,500 Japanese defenders, only 28 remained alive to surrender. The ferocious fighting on Attu showed the Japanese they had no chance against the Americans. In August, the Japanese commander ordered a secret, nighttime withdrawal of his remaining forces on Kiska. A few days later when the 17th Infantry stormed ashore as part of the Kiska Task Force, they found the island deserted. The Aleutians were again in American hands. Read more...
