Riots in London should be a moment of unity. It's too big, too important for us all to fall into the bear pit usual.

It's almost one in the morning. A moment ago breathlessly player News reported that a police station was burned down in Birmingham. In a minute or two, a new development that will reverse in another part of the country or another part of London. It is chaos, chaos, the most authentic we've ever seen here.

A moment ago, returning home from a walk around my area to report on what had happened, the actual effect of humans it hit me. As I passed another man, dressed in nothing more repulsive than jeans and a T-shirt, we both looked up at the other, suspicious and defensive. This look is what it has cost us so far. It increased the space between us.
